About Cornell Economics Courses

top view

Cornell is quite unusual, both in the number of economists on the faculty and in the breadth of their expertise. The Economics Department is the hub of a campus-wide community of almost 100 economists.

Members of the Economics Department itself teach several dozen courses, covering:

  1. The core areas of Micro, Macro and Econometrics
  2. Analytical methods such as game theory
  3. All the standard areas of applied economics, such as public finance and industrial organization
  4. Special topics, such as the economy of modern China and economics of industrial policy.

Economists affiliated with other units at Cornell teach many additional courses, some of which can be counted toward the Economics major. All such courses approved for application toward the major are cross-listed with Economics -- they carry Economics course numbers and appear in the Economics section of the Course Catalog. If a course offered in another department is not cross-listed with an Econ course number, it is not applicable toward the Econ major.

The Department offers both an Honors Program (Econ 4990-91) and Independent Research (Econ 4980). See Opportunities for Research for further detail. Econ 4980 and 4990-91 do not count toward the major.
